Identity Theft

Identity Theft can be caused by physically stealing/uplifting documents or by electronically uplifting information. Electronic identity theft is on a rapid rise. It has the ability to easily scale - both in the amount and speed of information uplifted - as well as utilizing this information to efficiently and quickly perform electronic crime.

Tens of millions in the USA suffer identity theft each year. And once key details have been secured such as social security numbers, date of birth, full name etc. they can be re-used - as such details cannot be changed. Scammers store such details, along with credit card, login and address details. The major means of collecting this information is via key logging and phishing.

Impact on Organizations

The ability to steal sensitive corporate data has far reaching implications for an organization. Misuse of trade secrets, scuppering deals, embezzlement, corporate blackmail - all are real threats and the resulting publicity is also highly damaging.

IDC estimated the average costs of Identity theft to organizations in 2006 was US$4.8m.
